Welcome to the official website of the “Climate Change and Security Challenges” project.

This four-year project (2025–2028) is being conducted at the Faculty of Croatian Studies, University of Zagreb, in cooperation with external partners from the “Dr. Franjo Tuđman” University of Defence and Security and the Catholic University of Croatia. The interdisciplinary project “Climate Change and Security Challenges”, abbreviated as CLImateSECurity (CLI-SEC), seeks to identify the conditions under which climate risks spread across different segments of society and within the geopolitical context, as well as to assess the impact of climate change on various social, religious and geopolitical dimensions.

The relationship between climate change and different dimensions of security presents a new challenge to the restructuring of the roles of the state and the economy, as well as to the relationship between humanity and nature within the broader context of civilisational continuity. Climate change adaptation and risk management are becoming central to future global development. Through its research findings, the project aims to raise awareness, formulate recommendations and highlight the challenges arising from climate change. Although a wide range of projections, scenarios and assessments of future climate change and its impacts already exists, considerable uncertainty remains regarding how the consequences of climate change are connected to different dimensions of security challenges.

The project therefore aims to advance understanding of the interrelationship between climate change and security risks, develop an integrated approach to analysing them, and provide evidence-based guidelines for effectively addressing these challenges at the local and national levels.
